Every attempt should be made to protect the patient while performing a dental treatment. One should avoid procedural complications without any compromises. We have realized that there is always apprehension, anxiety, and fear while performing a dental treatment. Swallowing of crowns, bridges, impression material, sodium hypochlorite, and endo instruments like k files & and other files should be avoided.
For decades, rubber dam application has been mandatory during dental treatment for the protection of the patient from swallowing instruments like the K files. These files are potential hazards and may be fatal if swallowed. Incidences of swallowing K files and getting trapped in the trachea or bronchial tract have been recorded in the past history. Nowadays accidents with the hex driver are common during implant procedure. Emergency surgery may be required in some of the patients and it is a mishap for the patient. Many times, applying a rubber dam is difficult due to the anatomy of the tooth or the gag reflex of the patient. Applying a rubber dam on a badly mutilated tooth, for example, 2nd molar or third molar is sometimes difficult. It may be difficult due to the location of the tooth, the shape, and the anatomy of the tooth.
Losing a tooth is a great loss for the patient due to the inability of a clinician to apply a rubber dam. While keeping this view in mind, i–Grip is developed for dental surgeons to protect the patient from swallowing instruments, if rubber dam application is not possible. That does not mean that i – Grip is a substitute for rubber dam application.
